The city (Mexico City)
Mexico City is the capital city of Mexico and has a population of 8.8 million.
The city is the country's political, commercial, social and cultural centre as
well as being the largest transport hub. Its historic centre and the remains
of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan as well as the water gardens in the
Xochimilco district were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1987
with the central university campus of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma
de México following in 2007. The city was founded in 1345.
Due to its high altitude the city is located in what are defined as the cool
tropics; hence it has an average temperature of 15.9 degrees. At the same
time most of the rainfall occurs during the month of July. This, the largest
Mexican metropolis, has to cope with numerous environmental problems.
These include high levels of atmospheric pollution, problems with the
supply of drinking water, inadequate waste disposal structures, deficiencies
in the provision of local public transport and excessive traffic congestion.
According to the World Health Organization, the quality of the air in Mexico
City was for a long time considered to be one of the worst in the world.
Tourist attractions include various theatres and museums. Examples of
architecture well worth visiting are the Zocalo, the historic centre of Mexico
City, the Paseo de la Reforma and the Pyramid of the sun at Teotihuacán.
The cityscape is completed by the many parks and natural monuments.
The most popular sport in Mexico City is football. Here, the most important
matches are held in the 87,000 capacity Aztec Stadium. Typical for the
cuisine of the capital region are "Antojitos Mexicanos“ - which are made
from the tortilla pastry masa - a bread substitute of maize similar to
pancakes. These include for example tacos - small tortillas with every
conceivable variation of filling - as well as "tortas" (filled wheat bread rolls)
and “tostadas" (deep-fried flat tortillas with spread).
The club
Club América is the soccer club in Mexico City. The club plays in the
country's top league and plays its home games in the legendary Azteca
Stadium. The club is the record winner of the CONCACAF Champions
League and Mexico's record champion. The club was founded in 1916.
Football in Mexico initially developed through the immigrant or temporarily
working English people: in church communities, workplaces and schools.
Club América also emerged from this environment. The club has been
extremely successful, winning 13 championship titles, most recently in
2018. The club from the state capital has also won seven cups. The club
most recently won the cup this year.
